TEAM PNG CHEF'S COMMENTS

FROM TEAM PNG'S CHEF DE MISSION (SEPT 3):
Bonjour.
I am happy with Day 1 of the 2013 IX Mini Pacific Games where a lot of medals were won, as well as a lot of improvement has been made.
There are a lot of first timers in Team PNG that came to this game and they have done well so far.
For example, in the men’s V6 500m in va’a, PNG has won bronze – the first medal for a PNG men’s va’a team. The six paddlers are composed of three veterans and three first timers.
The women’s va’a team won a bronze in the 2005 Mini Games in Palau. Now, they won a silver – that is improvement.
In weighlifting, PNG teens raked in two silvers and seven bronzes. These were won by teenagers and the future looks good for PNG.
Fred Oala, who is not even 18, brought in two silver medals and one bronze. Of course, the more experienced Morea Baru brought us three top medals – and that was expected.
Some of our men sprinters have qualified for the finals and a young athlete Kaspar Simbai opened the competition by bringing PNG its first medal when he took out the bronze.
So, I am happy with the progress and we hope to do better in the second and following days.
Malo te kataki.
