SEPT 2 STORY
THE opening ceremony
for the IX Mini Pacific Games in Wallis and Futuna showcased the traditional
dances and songs of the Polynesians in welcoming teams from the other nations.
The 100-plus athletes
and officials representing PNG marched into the newly-built synthetic track of
Kafika Stadium with contingents from the other Pacific nations.
As part of the
ceremony, teams had to bow before the King of Wallis and do a war cry, if they
have one.
The Games start
tomorrow (Tuesday) with the athletics, va’a, volleyball and weightlifting.
Team PNG General Team
Manager John Susuve is positive about the preparations undertaken by the
athletes and is sure good results will show starting tomorrow (Tuesday).
“Despite the heat in
Wallis and Futuna, I am happy with the preparations so far and know that
athletes will perform to expectation when the Games commence tomorrow,” he
said.
The opening ceremony
saw Wallisian groups re-enacting the history of their people with dances and
welcomed the contingents.
