THE fastest sprinters in the Pacific are the Fijians and the Papua New
Guineans.
The fastest man is Fijian
Banuve Tabakaucoro and the fastest woman is PNG’s Toea Wisil, who is also the current
Australian 100m champion.
In the men’s 100m on Sept 4, PNG’s Kupun
Wisil (Toea’s brother) chased the favourite Fijian Tabakauroro all the way with
the Fijian setting a new Mini Games record of 10.33s and winning the gold, with
Wisil managing a time of 10.60.
Another Fijian Francis Kirikirikulo won the
bronze with a time of 10.71s.
In the women’s 100m, Toea Wisil had no
problem, stopping the clock at 11.68s, followed by Fijian Yunis Bese 12.21 and
Nauru’s Lovelite Detenamo taking the bronze with a time of 12.22, which is a
possible national record.
On the same day PNG women’s 400m runners
of Betty Burua, Wisil and Shirley Wunatup made a clean sweep in the event.
Burua
stopped the clock at 56.96s, Wisil 57.58 and Wunatup 58.50.
Wisil
was leading most of the way but was overtaken by Burua in the last 100m.
